--> Same thing with a naturopathic doctor -- you go to a naturopathic doctor, and you say, "Well, who do you work with collaboratively?" And they say, "Eh, in that profession they're a bunch of idiots that just kill people." Well, I wouldn't want to go to a naturopathic doctor like that.
Mike: Sadly, it seems though, that so many practitioners in conventional medicine there are still many who are shut, very close minded, to alternative medicine or complementary medicine.
Dr. | Alternative Therapies Health Medicine 1:29-37, 1995] A naturopathic doctor tracked 21 cancer patients on Gerson therapy and found only one had survived past the 5-year mark. [Townsend Letter for Doctors, August 1995]
Gerson therapy touches on a mechanism of cancer control, that of depriving tumors of iron. Fasting and vegetarian diets deliver low amounts of iron, which may explain any reported successes. [Townsend Letter for Doctors, April 1996] But Gerson therapists have little understanding of how iron controls cancer. It is just intuitively practiced. | | Hoxsey treatment
In the 1920s naturopathic doctor Harry Hoxsey promoted a therapy passed down to him by his father and great grandfather. It consists of red clover, licorice, burdock root, stillingia root, Berberis root, pokeroot, cascara, prickly ash bar and buckthorn bark plus potassium iodide, but the actual formula varies from patient to patient. Hoxsey therapy should be abandoned for more authoritative herbal remedies. Recall, Hoxsey was working with limited tools and only had limited number of herbs to use. | That could be a nurse, chiropractor, naturopathic doctor, acupuncturist, or allopathic medical doctor. Unfortunately few know anything about transdermal magnesium mineral therapy because it is so new. The most pertinent question about magnesium chloride dosing is: how effectively is it absorbed transdermally?
Magnesium chloride is without doubt a versatile mineral medicine, though as with all forms of magnesium supplementation, it is not easy to calculate the exact dosage. | | Magnesium—
New Medical Miracle
Carolyn Dean, MD, ND, a medical and naturopathic doctor, New York City, and author of The Miracle of Magnesium. Ballantine. www.carolyndean.com. he mineral magnesium has amazing powers to treat and even prevent serious medical conditions.
New finding: Magnesium is a key factor in memory and learning. Adequate levels may even prevent Alzheimer's disease. | Through my work as a naturopathic doctor and founder of five natural health clinics in Florida that specialize in colon hydrotherapy and detoxification, I've watched people transform their lives in ways unimaginable to most who rely solely on traditional medicine or who think they must live with persistent illness, pain, and exhaustion.
During the past two decades I have watched the devastating effects of toxic exposure on the human body and the resulting decline in our overall digestive health because of the overwhelming number of chemicals to which we are exposed every day. | MFT), a naturopathic doctor (N.D.), and a psychologist (Ph.D.). In addition, doctors Dozor and Barnett have a compendious knowledge of Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, herbalism, and other alternative medical specialties.
The treatment protocol is coordinated by a computer system that tracks patient files and updates them in real time. During a consultation with the naturopath, for instance, he enters his notes on a screen that is immediately available to all the other practitioners. He might also walk ten steps down the hall to consult with the psychologist or with the family physician. | Even though many of these cases are of no serious concern, a woman with abnormal bleeding distinctly different from her familiar history should do the cautious thing and be seen by a licensed health-care practitioner such as a naturopathic doctor (N.D.), medical doctor (M.D.), osteopathic docror (D.O.), nurse-practitioner (N.P.), or physician's assistant (P.A.). | A common misunderstanding about the practice of naturopathic medicine is that it is not 'scientific'. The naturopathic doctor is believed to be interested in diet and lifestyle factors only, not in the medical condition, and recommends treatments that have no evidence of efficacy. Nothing could be further from the truth. For the patient's safety, the naturopathic doctor must establish a diagnosis based on medical history, physical examination, and standard laboratory tests. The diagnosis yields the information needed to select the appropriate naturopathic treatment. | If you suffer persistent earaches, consider having your physician or naturopathic doctor flush your ears with warm water.
Muscle Soreness
Sore muscles are the result of too much lactic acid and uric acid having accumulated in the muscle tissue.
To counteract acids in the muscle tissue, drink at least half a quart (0.5 liter) of green-vegetable juice. The "Potion Of Invincibility" described in Appendix C: Sunfood Recipes works extremely well. The alkaline minerals in green juices neutralize acids. | | An individual with this condition should have their iodine levels checked by a naturopathic doctor or physician. (If iodine is absent, two tablespoons of raw kelp seaweed should be daily added to the diet). If levels are excessive, no sea vegetables or iodized salt of any kind should be included in the diet. Additionally, adding raw polyunsaturated seed oils (flax, hemp, etc.) as the major fat source in the diet can slow thyroid function. | I said to myself, "Here I am, becoming a naturopathic doctor. I'm getting my PhD. What am I doing feeding my dog a bag of food when I don't know what I'm feeding her?"
So, I started to research more about foods to discover a food for my next dog that would be appropriate. I started reading about holistic care for pets. I found out that there were some vets and companies starting to feel this way. They were beginning to make foods that are a little bit healthier. I thought this was great. Then I started doing consultations for humans. I got into my profession and started to work. | I want to make sure that I am not doing any harm by understanding their full situation because I think it's important to add that me being a naturopathic doctor and having a different philosophy of how I practice does not mean it's a we/they thing. It's not me against them -- it's about the patient. It's about who they are, what their process is, and utilizing all of their resources. That means utilizing their primary care doctor. But also certainly I think we need to be -- what's the word that I'm looking for -- realistic, perhaps, about shrinking uterine fibroids. | I'm sure if you speak to a naturopathic doctor, I'm sure they have the whole emphasis on all these things that I have to go learn about.
When I realized what they've got to offer, I realized there was already something that we're missing in conventional medicine. Not just the supplements but also the whole complements of different options for patients. That would include the meditation, the yoga, and the non-touch therapy.
A lot of centers now are developing integrative medicine clinics. | In the vast majority of cases, you will be healthier and wiser by ignoring the advice of your conventional doctor or dentist and seeking out a naturopathic doctor and a natural health dentist. In fact, it's very important to avoid allowing a doctor or dentist to even hit you with a scare story or other manipulation tactic, because most people will just go right along with their advice even when it makes no sense. People don't question medical authorities as much as they should. And dentists know it. | Find a naturopathic doctor and find a safe way to get off prescription drugs. It is not that difficult to find ways to prevent chronic diseases.
Again, if you have someone in a hospital, nursing home or convalescence home, accompany him or her. Don't let the staff go to town on your loved one just because you are not there. People are not going to heal very well in the hospital. Of course, there are medical circumstances where they may need oxygen or a crash team that can come in and save their life. I understand that, but there are many people who don't need to be in the hospital. | FATS
Fatty Fruits, Nuts, Coconuts, Seeds
The Sunfood Triangle: The Center Point

If you are on insulin injections, please contact a naturopathic doctor to devise a plan to wean yourself down or completely off from insulin.
It takes years to heal a diabetic condition, but it can be healed by staying the path. Many years ago, through a series of synchronous events, I ended up on The Dating Game. I met one of the show producers backstage. We started talking about raw foods. | When I used to work with humans as a naturopathic doctor, I couldn't believe the amount of people who were coming to me as heavy yeast users. We took them off the yeast, and we reversed a lot of symptoms just by doing that. So, this got me interested in how this affects animals, too. I started to see old dogs with arthritic joints, for instance. We took them off all yeast products, and they would start to recover.
This interview continues in part 3 (published tomorrow), where Dr. Lisa Newman discusses pet nutrition.
Dr. | For the patient's safety, the naturopathic doctor must establish a diagnosis based on medical history, physical examination, and standard laboratory tests. The diagnosis yields the information needed to select the appropriate naturopathic treatment. Once the etiology, pathogenesis, and pathophysiology of a condition are understood, the doctor can then recommend steps to restore normal physiological function. | So when they go to their doctor, whether it's a medical doctor or a naturopathic doctor, I think their first question would be, "Who do you collaborate with?" If this medical doctor says, "Well, I think this natural medicine stuff is kinda baloney," well, if he were reasonably open-minded he may say, "Well you can use it, it won't hurt you," well, someone like that, why waste your time with them? | | Well, I wouldn't want to go to a naturopathic doctor like that.
Mike: Sadly, it seems though, that so many practitioners in conventional medicine there are still many who are shut, very close minded, to alternative medicine or complementary medicine.
Dr. Pizzorno: I think that's very true, and I think there are unfortunately alternative medicine people whose minds are shut as well. And I thought about this for a lot of years, wondering why we're so hostile towards each other -- I mean, not everybody is, but a lot are, and it occurs to me, we only see each other's failures. | So every patient who comes to see me, virtually everyone who comes to see a naturopathic doctor, can have their health improved. Sometimes, however, if the pathology has progressed very far, then while we can improve their health, we may not be able to get the body to the point where it can get rid of the disease entirely. But I have never seen a patient that I couldn't give advice to that wouldn't help them become healthier.
Mike: Do you think a naturopathic approach is having an impact of catching on in traditional medical schools?
Dr. Pizzorno: No question about it. | | That's nothing new to Ron Hobbs, a naturopathic doctor and professor at Bastyr University in Washington state.
Hobbs and other experts attribute the fish oil's healing powers to its vast store of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). If he could do only one thing for people besides urge them to exercise, says Hobbs, he would "make sure they got more omega-3 in their diet."
Be warned that fish oil supplements may contain toxins from the fish's food and water, although some experts say the risk is slim. Supplements can also interfere with certain medications. | | In their popular book Arthritis Survival, osteopathic doctor Robert Ivker and naturopathic doctor Todd Nelson present the New Life Eating Plan as part of their mind, body, and spiritual treatment program for relieving the pain of osteoarthritis.
According to the authors, food allergies as well as acid and minerals that build up in your joints can aggravate inflammation. Foods like dairy products, oranges, wheat, peanuts, red meat and poultry, and plants in the nightshade family, tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and eggplant, are common culprits. | | Ron Hobbs, a naturopathic doctor and professor at Bastyr University, agrees. "Nutrition is key."
In OA, cartilage breaks down faster than your body can rebuild it, so you need to eat plenty of joint-strengthening foods to fight back. "If you're not eating the nutrients, they're not in your blood," Hobbs warns, and your cartilage won't get what it needs to regrow. "You've got to have these nutrients on board. | For a thoroili tor, a naturopathic doctor, a chiropract ment can be recommended. spasms and cramping as the result of emotional stimulating blood flow, unblocking energy, and So ne of the following points may be quite tender; louch, instead of heavy pressure. I would like to thank the Lord for the blessing of being able to help others with holistic medicine. To my wife, Angela, who is a fine doctor and, more important, an outstanding mother and wife. To my three children, who amaze and inspire me. | | Spinal alignment by a chiropractor, an osteopath, or a naturopathic doctor can be helpful for cases of chronic muscle spasm and aches.
Obesity
Obesity is the single most common problem that doctors see in their practices. Unfortunately, it's also a risk factor for a host of disorders. People who are more than 20 percent over the recommended weight for their height and sex are more vulnerable to degenerative diseases—heart problems, certain cancers, diabetes, arthritis, and so on—than the rest of the population is. | | Consult with a naturopathic doctor or a reputable herbalist, a nutritionist, or a holistic doctor to find out which brands are of the highest quality. Many health food store and pharmacy employees will be able to help you as well.
Frequency of Use
This book provides detailed information on how to take the recommended herbs and supplements for each condition. Following are general guidelines on how frequently you should take herbal supplements.
Acute conditions: Take the recommended dosage every two to three waking hours to relieve symptoms and support the body's response. | |
