--> Rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, lecithin, linoleic acid, and vitamin E, sunflower oil has a long history of being used to help the endocrine and nervous systems and to reduce cholesterol levels. Many naturopathic physicians believe that sunflower oil helps the formation of healthy tissue and generally aids resistance to disease. The consumption of sunflower oil (one teaspoonful three times a day) has cured paralysis stemming from polyneuritis and greatly reduced symptoms from multiple sclerosis. | | OA. The importance of physical therapy appears to be quite significant, especially when administered regularly.
Beyond physical therapy, glucosamine sulfate is a very effective natural product for OA. Glucosamine is a simple molecule that can be manufactured in the body. The main function of glucosamine in joints is to stimulate the manufacture of molecules known as glycosamino-glycans (GAGs), which are the key structural components of cartilage. It appears that as some people age, they lose the ability to manufacture sufficient levels of glucosamine. | A prime example is the widespread use of antibiotics, which has given rise to strains of bacteria that are highly resistant to most drugs in the conventional arsenal, says Sheila Quinn, association manager of the American Association of naturopathic physicians, a Seattle-based organization that provides information on naturopathic medicine and referrals to naturopathic physicians. While anibiotics have saved millions of lives, they haven't really solved problems such as tuberculosis, which is turning up in new forms that don't respond to conventional therapies, Dr. Edelberg says. | In North America, this is a field of therapeutics utilized by naturopathic physicians, and an excellent modern guide can be found in The Textbook of Natural Medicine. This technique has many benefits, especially when a careful selection of herbal additives is made.

Echinacea has quite a reputation among naturopathic physicians and native American healers for the treatment of snake bite. Echinacea's inhibition of hyaluronidase,21 a component of snake venom, might account for much of its reputed efficacy; most snake venoms permeate the body by way of hyaluronidase, which breaks down connective tissue in the ground substance between cells.
Wound healing
Several uncontrolled clinical studies substantiate echinacea's wound-healing activities.341 The largest (4,598 patients) demonstrated that a salve of the juice of the aerial portion of E. | | With the demise of the Eclectic movement, the popularity of echinacea in the United States waned except among naturopathic physicians. Around 1980 echinacea was "rediscovered," owing to increased consumer interest in immune system disorders such as candidiasis, chronic fatigue syndrome, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), and cancer. Although interest in echinacea had decreased in America between the 1930s and 1980s, European physicians continued research. Much of this research was initiated by a 1932 study by Gerhard Madaus. | | The study implies berberine-containing plants may be ideal in the treatment of "strep throat," a condition historically treated with goldenseal by American naturopathic physicians. Berberine's action in inhibiting Candida albicans prevents the overgrowth of yeast that is a common side effect of antibiotic use.
Immunostimulatory activity
Berberine has been shown to increase the blood supply to the spleen.12 This improved blood supply may promote optimal activity of the spleen. The spleen is responsible for filtering the blood and for releasing compounds that potentiate immune function. | California Association of naturopathic physicians in Santa Rosa. "That's good news."
As we all know, good news travels fast. Herbs have become the medicines of choice for so many people in recent years that the coinage "herbal renaissance" has taken its place right alongside "information age" as a defining description of our times. You are not alone in your interest in the healing power of herbs.
The best guess is that you're sharing that interest with about 60 million Americans. That's how many people—about one-third of the

An Embarrassment of Herbal Riches
The first thing that you've probably noticed about herbal medicine these days is that there are lots of options out there—lots of traditions (such as Western, Chinese, and Indian), lots of herbs themselves, and lots of ways to use them. It can seem bewildering.
But, truth be told, the sheer volume of choices makes it easier, not harder, to find the herbal remedy that's right for you. | Like many nutritionists and naturopathic physicians, I specifically recommend hydrolyzed, or pure, dairy or goat whey because it is made up of smaller, more easily digested particles that have less allergic reactivity than conventional whey products. Some products combine hypoallergenic rice protein to complement the whey; many of these products are classified as medical foods and are not available in health stores. To obtain them, consult your doctor or see the resource section at the end of this book. | American Association of naturopathic physicians, who practices in Portland, Oregon, because it can be irritating to the skin. "I recommend what we call a neutral bath, just a degree or two over body temperature." Adding oatmeal has an immediately soothing effect, says Dr. Kruzel.
Put 2 cups of oatmeal, the type called old-fashioned (any brand is fine), in a white sock and let the water from the faucet run through it into the tub. | Though fasting and detoxification are en vogue today, to experienced naturopathic physicians and doctors of Oriental medicine there is nothing new about these practices. They are a cornerstone of natural healing approaches.
To be well, we need to renew ourselves from the inside out, exchange old cells for new. When individual cells are renewed, tissues are improved and organ function can be restored—only then does a cure take place. The curative process begins with detoxification, a cornerstone of natural health and the key to cellular renewal—which is to say, the beginning of a lasting cure. | Options: Revolutionary Ideas in the War on Cancer and books by mail-People Against Cancer, PO Box 10, Otho, Iowa 50569; 1-800-662-2623

Commercially raised animals are often given hormones for more robust growth and milk production, so if you eat meat or dairy products, you might be absorbing extra estrogen. Another possible concern with meat is that foods that are high in saturated fat have a tendency to make estrogen more available to the body.
Phase out meat and dairy products in favor of soy foods (tofu, tempeh, miso, and soy milk) and fiber-rich foods, says Dr. Silbert. | | This combination is commonly known as Robert's Formula and is often recommended by naturopathic physicians, says Dr. Taylor. kidney stones_
The pain of passing a kidney stone has been compared to the pain of childbirth. With childbirth, there's a sweet reward. With a kidney stone, there's nothing but the production of a granular object.
Men are more likely than women to get calcium stones, and genes play a role as well. Because of that genetic factor, if your parents or grandparents had kidney stones, you're at higher risk for getting them yourself. | | Das's study took glucosamine hydrochloride, many naturopathic physicians typically recommend taking glucosamine sulfate because it is the type that has been tested most thoroughly in clinical trials.
You might see a third form of glucosamine on store shelves called N-acetylglucosamine, commonly referred to as NAG. While the label may state that NAG is better-utilized and therefore more effective than glucosamine sulfate, research has not yet been conducted that would prove or disprove that claim, says Dr. Aesoph.
"The big argument now is what form to use," she explains. | Quercetin is recommended by naturopathic physicians as a natural antihistamine for allergies, and it is useful in treating hay fever and asthma. It is also useful in the treatment of interstitial cystitis, a chronic urinary tract inflammatory syndrome characterized by severe pelvic pain. The recommended dosage of quercetin is 400 mg, 2 to 3 times daily. To treat chronic viral infections, the dosage is 1,000 mg, 3 times daily. | | This lead me to intensive study and to interviewing immunologists and virologists, as well as naturopathic physicians and doctors of Oriental medicine who had experience in treating viral diseases. I subsequently published several academic papers on the integrated management of hepatitis C, and out of all this developed the practical ideas for this book.
In the twenty-first century the specter of a viral epidemic looms over us, and in many ways our fears are justified. A brief review of the history of infectious disease and modern viral illnesses will set the stage for this book. | Licensed naturopathic physicians in Washington State are now allowed to furnish medical exemptions, as are chiropractors in some states.
Religious exemptions are accepted in all states except West Virginia and Mississippi. Philosophical exemptions, based on a parent's personal beliefs, are permitted in 22 states. This option requires a written statement from the parent indicating that he or she has "a moral conviction opposed to vaccination." (Richard Leviton, "Who Calls the Shots? | The long-held notion of "starving a fever" is supported by naturopathic physicians and doctors who uphold evolutionary medical principles. Eric R. Yarnell, N.D., president of the Botanical Medical Academy in Sisters, Oregon, says that substances called dietary lectins can increase the likelihood of infection from viruses and other pathogenic microorganisms, and they can also induce autoimmune diseases (Yarnell 2001). Lectins are proteins that bind with sugars, and are found in many common foods including milk, wheat, legumes, and the nightshade family (potato, tomato, eggplant, and peppers). | Its structure is very similar to that of quercetin, a bioflavonoid frequently used by naturopathic physicians to treat allergy. Scute root is very reliable, and we use it more frequently in our office than perhaps any other anti-inflammatory. I find it an especially effective treatment for asthma and digestive system inflammation.

• According to numerous in vitro and animal studies, the flavonoids in scute root possess arteriosclerosis-preventative and chemoprotective actions (Gao et al., 1999; Shao et al., 1999; Urn et al., 1999; Kim et al., 1999; Yabu et al. | People who suffer from cluster headaches often have abnormal fluctuations in their melatonin levels surrounding the attacks. Some naturopathic physicians test people who have cluster headaches to see if they are losing unusually high levels of this hormone through urination; if they are, melatonin therapy may be in order. Abnormal excretion of melatonin may be associated with dysfunction of the hypothalamus, a portion of the brain that controls hunger, thirst, body temperature, and other aspects of the body's metabolic balance. | Catasauqua, PA 18032 610-433-2448
