If you have osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, the removal of rofecoxib (Vioxx) from the market because of reports linking it to heart attack and stroke took away one of your pain-relief options. Dr. Pizzorno was appointed by President Clinton in December 2000 to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy. | Why natural medicine is winning
In the big picture, by the way, things are actually trending strongly towards naturopathic medicine. With this latest legislative event here in the United States, Big Pharma may have won a legislative battle, but they're losing the war. Consider the following:
The public opinion towards drug companies is at an all-time low. As the truth continues to come out about the predatory practices by Big Pharma, the public is increasingly disgusted with what they're learning about fraudulent science, deadly drugs, the bribery of doctors, price-fixing schemes and so on. | Because conventional docs think the symptom is the disease or the disorder. But naturopathic medicine sees the cancer tumor as only a symptom of a much deeper problem. Just like the water dripping into the home is only a symptom of a broken roof in need of repair, a cancer tumor is only a symptom of a serious underlying metabolic problem.
The naturopathic physician would fix the cause of the problem, but they wouldn't stop there. They would also realize that if the roof has one hole in it now, it seems likely that there could be other holes that are beginning to form, too. | NATUROPATHY
Naturopathy was founded on the principle of "nature cure," which asserts that the body is essentially self-healing if provided with the right diet, environment, and habits, such as meditation. naturopathic medicine concentrates on healing the whole person by identifying and resolving the underlying cause of a condition, rather than only treating symptoms. Practitioners will determine the most natural, non-toxic, and least invasive therapies necessary for achieving a cure.
The doses and cures outlined in the naturopathic sections of this book are primarily intended for adults. | If you have been diagnosed with this disorder you should consult with a doctor of Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine or an ND (doctor of naturopathic medicine) who is knowledgeable about nutrition and its effects on the body's endocrine glands.
Gingko Biloba—Brain Food; And Coenzyme Q10
I also recommend Gingko Biloba, available at most health food stores. Guarana and Gingko seem to complement each other. Gingko is considered brain food. It apparently increases blood flow to the brain, thereby improving memory and brain function. | You cannot choose conventional medicine for six months then hope to switch successfully to naturopathic medicine or alternative medicine after you have been maimed, harmed, and poisoned by your doctor or your oncologist.
It is important to make the switch before ever being poisoned. Embrace natural medicine from day one and you'll never have to endure the permanent damage of chemotherapy, the extremely harmful side effects of pharmaceuticals, or the lifetime maiming and scar tissue associated with surgery. | The liver is so central to your body's overall functioning capacity that a basic tenet of naturopathic medicine is that many diseases can be treated through addressing the liver. In other words, if you can optimize your liver's function, you may help alleviate or cure other health problems either directly or indirecdy.
The Life Force of the Liver: While the liver actually resides in the upper part of your abdomen on the right side, it's positioned here in the center to represent how fundamental it is in a variety of body functions. | Examples include mind-body medicine, homeopathic medicine, naturopathic medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, herbal remedies, nutritional supplements, chiropractic and osteopathic manipulation, and biofield therapies. These interventions are considered to be complementary medicine when they are used together with conventional medicine (as when meditation is used to reduce a patient's pain following surgery). | Oregon and Arizona. Naturopathic medicine shares historical roots with Eclectic medicine, and today integrates traditional natural therapeutics with modern scientific medical diagnoses and standards of care. Naturopaths complete premedical university training, then attend naturopathic college for 4 years. They are awarded the title N.D, or doctor of naturopathic medicine and are currently licensed in an increasing number of states. | At the beginning of 1997 there were two accredited schools: Bastyr University in Seattle and the National College of naturopathic medicine in Portland, Oregon. What Is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is one of the fastest-growing alternative forms of medicine in North America. This form of medicine uses ultra-diluted amounts of plant, mineral, and animal substances to stimulate the healing systems of the body. | | Elderberry or Elder Flowers (Sambucus nigra) Medicinal Use: Colds, flu's, coughs, and sinusitis study conducted by the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, in conjunction with the Canadian College of naturopathic medicine, looked at the safety of echinacea during pregnancy. In the study, 206 women who used echinacea during pregnancy for upper respiratory tract infections were analyzed, along with a control group of 198 pregnant women who had upper respiratory tract infections but never used echinacea. The researchers found no association between the use of echinacea and birth defects. | It is that philosophical and ethical position that defines not only my own view of health and healing, but also that of naturopathic medicine. That position stands in great contrast to the position of conventional medicine held by drug companies, medical schools, and the FDA. They collectively insist that information about health should be kept from the public—that this information is dangerous and that people should never be allowed to learn the truth about what kinds of plants, superfoods, or supplements can help them heal. | Southwest College of naturopathic medicine & Health Sciences

In 2001, a 28-year-old Caucasian male of Jewish descent presented to my private office at the Canadian College of naturopathic medicine (CCNM) with complaints of fatigue and constant abdominal bloating after meals. These symptoms had persisted for 3 months. He began to take niacin at incremental dosages of 100 mg, eventually working up to 1200 mg per day. Within 3 days of supplementation, there was a noticeable increase in energy and a significant decrease in abdominal bloating. Occasionally, no abdominal bloating occurred. | We in naturopathic medicine have this theme called vis medicatrix naturae which is "the healing power of nature."
Mike: And you mentioned lifestyle changes as well -- what percentage of the health problems that people are experiencing today do you think can be treated with lifestyle changes?
Dr. Pizzorno: I think we have a range from what therapies are curative versus those that help the patients become healthier, but don't necessarily clear up the disease. So every patient who comes to see me, virtually everyone who comes to see a naturopathic doctor, can have their health improved. | Helen Healy, a graduate of National College of naturopathic medicine, had a successful practice in St. Paul for twelve years with no patient complaints or allegations of harm or misconduct.
The state departments backed off from Dr. Healy only after thousands of citizens led marches through the streets and conducted phone campaigns to their government representatives. The realization that all unlicensed CAM practitioners were still subject to legal prosecution at any time fueled the ongoing movement in Minnesota, despite the fact the authorities had backed down from closing Healy's practice. | National College of naturopathic medicine www.ncnm.edu (503) 255-4860

Alternative Health Insurance Services www. | A common misunderstanding about the practice of naturopathic medicine is that it is not 'scientific'. The naturopathic doctor is believed to be interested in diet and lifestyle factors only, not in the medical condition, and recommends treatments that have no evidence of efficacy. Nothing could be further from the truth. For the patient's safety, the naturopathic doctor must establish a diagnosis based on medical history, physical examination, and standard laboratory tests. The diagnosis yields the information needed to select the appropriate naturopathic treatment. | But there is a balance that can be achieved, and I think this balance is being achieved right now by those in naturopathic medicine and the healing arts like therapeutic touch. Yet this balance is not at all achieved by conventional medicine, because ethics and compassionate are simply not part of the curriculum.
I ask, how can a medical system that has no recognition of the humanity of patients expect to find success treating those patients? It can't. And that's why modern (western) medicine has failed. | |
